Introduction

The Asian Quidditch Cup (AQC) is a club level quidditch competition with the participation of clubs in the region of Asia and Oceania. The competition held this year in Hanoi, Vietnam is the second, following the first one held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016. The tournament is to come about on the 22nd and 23rd of July, 2017.

Taking place eleven years after the invention of the sport in Middlebury, Vermont, the first tournament in Kuala Lumpur witnessed the ANU Owls from Australia lifting the trophy, while Damansara Dementors (Malaysia) and Subang Chimeras (Malaysia) came second and third correspondingly. Although there were only three teams participating at the time, quidditch successfully attracted some spectators from other countries including Vietnam to attend at the venue.

The second Asian Quidditch Cup this year is the first time that the host is determined by bidding. Two candidates earlier were Hanoi and Seoul. The bids were submitted in March 2017 and the host was determined shortly based on individual evaluation by interim members of the Oceania-Asia Quidditch Committee consisting of representatives from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

After the Asian Quidditch Cup 2017, the tournament will rest for a year and continue in 2019, then be biennially organised to match the IQA World Cup/Regional tournament alternation.
